History
The vast 100-acre hospital complex was built in the French Renaissance style with Scottish Baronial detailing in traditional Red Sandstone and opened in circa 1896 with 540 beds to care for patients from the city. Over the next 100 years the hospital expanded rapidly from its original design with the addition of many more buildings to cater for the ever-changing care needs. In 1996, like many other Victorian hospitals, the site was closed.
Planning permission for the village to be converted into a residential development was granted in 1999 and saw many of the original Grade A listed Thomson and Sandilands buildings retained. Some of the newer buildings were demolished to make way for new-build housing called Hamlets, each located in a woodland pocket.
Many of the Grade A listed buildings have been converted into apartments and new homes have been constructed in the Hamlets.
